(ooc: March 19. Open to all How to Train Your Dragon characters.)
Sploosh.
Hiccup found himself entranced by the ripples in the water that slowly stretched themselves out before returning to the usual stillness. It was interesting, he thought, how something so small and insignificant as a little rock could upset the otherwise calm waters. Hiccup didn't really know how he had ended up in the little valley near Raven Point. He really had wanted to be alone that morning, and after a bit of walking he had found the valley. It was so peaceful. So serene. So... not like Berk.
Berk was a village engulfed in a war against the dragons. Dragons which, in Hiccup's own opinion, really had done nothing more than try to feed themselves. Did he ever voice his thoughts on this matter? No. Not since that fateful night. The night he had killed a Monstrous Nightmare.
By Hiccup's account, which no one really had bothered to ask for, the event had been an accident. He had put more weight than he thought against a burned pillar and it had killed a Nightmare. Never in Hiccup's wildest dreams did he ever think he would have been able to kill such a large dragon. Yet, it had happened so accidentally. No one seemed to question how it had happened. They had been too stunned by the fact that he, Hiccup the Useless, had killed a dragon to really think about the circumstances of the event. Thinking back on it, though, Hiccup hadn't meant to kill the dragon. If given a chance to redo things, he probably wouldn't have killed the dragon at all. In fact, he probably wouldn't have been able to. All things considered, Hiccup was scrawny. He wasn't capable of wielding weapons, and most certainly not meant for dragon killing. ...That hadn't stopped Stoick from putting him in classes with the others.
Why? Why did it have to have happened that way?
Sploosh.
Why couldn't he have gone some other direction? Why couldn't he have avoided the encounter with the Nightmare all together?
Sploosh.
Hiccup pondered, and pondered, and pondered some more as he tossed another little rock up and down in his hand. He had given it quite a bit of thought, especially after being put up against that first Gronckle in dragon fighting classes, and he had come to the conclusion that he just wasn't a dragon killer. Not without it being an accidental occurrence, of course. He just couldn't bring himself to kill a dragon. Not even the puny Terrible Terrors. ...Maybe he really was useless.
As the ripples faded away again, Hiccup gritted his teeth and tossed the rock he had in his hand as hard as he could. It went flying, arching upward for a bit, before it landed with another sploosh in the water. He watched the ripples again before shuffling his feet awkwardly against the ground and sitting down by the lake's shore.
"Some Viking you are. The laughing stock of classes, the reject of the village... it's a wonder you haven't been banished yet." he murmured. "If you hadn't killed that Nightmare, you wouldn't be kept around." Hiccup sighed. It was like Stoick was expecting him to do a repeat performance of the accidental kill. The thing was, Hiccup couldn't. He almost wished that he had caught the Night Fury that had been on the raid that night. Maybe things would have turned out differently if he had.
Hiccup didn't bother to pick up another rock as the ripples faded away. He was too focused on staring at his own reflection in the water before him for the time being.

Astrid watched as Hiccup continued to throw rocks into the lake, muttering to himself, but mostly remaining quiet. He wasn't a stealthy viking, not in the least. She was able to follow him quiet easily, she new Hiccup was prone to clumsiness, leaving a trampled path in his wake. Astrid leaned against a nearby true, bemused by the fact she hadn't been noticed, and told herself she'd get a pat on the back later. Hiccup seemed fixated with the water, but as she squinted her eyes to look at the lake, she saw nothing but the fading edges of ripples. Maybe he was trying to drown a fish. She hoped Hiccup wasn't that stupid.
But than she wondered if he was fishing, fishing for food to bring back to the village. Her eyes narrowed, if he brought back any fish, she'd bring back more, and other forest foods. And there it was, her competitive edge. She didn't want to count Hiccup as a 'threat' but ever since he'd killed the monstrous nightmare, he'd seemed to have more attention, more respect, bringing back a ton of fish would have made him a saint at this rate. Her eyes narrowed again.
Astrid made her way down Hiccup's trodden path where the grass lay bent and the dirt scattered, broken. Leaning on her tippy toes of her brown boots, she looked over him, only ripples, and he was chock out of rocks.
"If you hadn't killed that Nightmare, you wouldn't be kept around." Astrid cocked her head at his words, picking up a handful of rocks. He was probably right anyway. Always count on Astrid to perk you up. Slowly, Astrid let the rocks drop, hopefully one or two would catch Hiccup, afterall he was stationary, and quiet observed in his own thoughts and probably self pity, or hatred. She couldn't blame him for picking on himself, he was fun to pick on.
After unloading her stock of rocks, Astrid poked Hiccup in the side with her boots, hands on hips, looking down at the gangly teenager.

Hiccup slightly raised his gaze from the water, thinking he had heard something dropping not too far off. While he did wonder what it was, he wasn't terribly concerned. It was probably some wild animal leaving the valley or entering it. Hiccup didn't pay it much mind. Despite this, he was becoming more aware that perhaps he wasn't as alone as he thought he was. Hiccup wondered if maybe it was Snotlout or Tuffnut come to taunt him about how he couldn't even kill a Terrible Terror. However, before he had a chance to find out, he felt something poke him in the side.
Needless to say, Hiccup was sufficiently startled by this development. With a yelp, Hiccup scrambled to his feet and, after trying to reestablish his footing, fell unceremoniously into the water before him. He didn't doubt he had startled any fish that might have wandered closer to the shore. After a couple of seconds, Hiccup rose sputtering and shivering slightly from his encounter with the water. Well, that certainly had created a sufficient number of ripples to look at.
Hiccup turned around at last after shaking his arms a little in a vain attempt to get some of the water off of him. Regardless of that fact, he was soaked sufficiently. Green eyes widened in surprise. "Astrid?" Hiccup asked. "What... why are you here?" he asked. Why would you do that? was a better question. However, he didn't feel like asking that much. He was more concerned with what Astrid was doing there.

Astrid was unable to supress a short fit of laughter, more at Hiccup's yelp than him falling into the water. But both were evenly funny. The boy was soaked inside and out, as it appeared and it was clear that any fishing Hiccup might have wanted to do, would be a vain attempt now.
Astrid only shrugged, pushing back her blonde bangs that fall back over her face at once. She slanted her hips at an angle and crossed her arms and gave a slight shrug. She had been right, it was fun to pick on the chief's son. Though it was odd how she and the other's were able to do it. The water soaking his clothes only seemed to exaggerate the scrawniness of the boy.
"I wanted to practice some tracking and I found a trail." she gestured to the trodden ground with a flip of her head, an amused smile still on her lips. The competitive feeling was now mostly gone, her head once again trying to soothe her from acting even more irrationally. "Sorry I scared you." She didn't sound sorry, not in the least. Probably just more amused.
It was admittedly wrong to pick on the boy, he'd never done anything to her. 'Accept he was the first teen to kill a dragon out of the arena.' she thought bitterly. ANd then curiousity sparked. "So what was that about what would happen if you didn't kill the monstrous nightmare?" she asked quizzically, hesitating in offering a hand to Hiccup. Maybe she should be nice, just in order to get information. She offered a wrapped hand to the teen, though it didn't really seem the most welcoming of offers.

Hiccup raised an eyebrow quizzically before allowing his gaze to go to where Astrid was gesturing to. He thought he had been covering his tracks fairly well. ...Okay, so he really hadn't been all that concerned in regards to covering his trail. The redhead was rather clumsy, after all. "OH... that. I... uh... I meant to do that." Hiccup said, trying to defend what as clearly a poor attempt at sneaking off on his own.
Although he was a bit skeptical of taking Astrid's hand, he couldn't just leave her hanging. After all, she had been kind enough to at least offer to help him up. He didn't even care if it seemed hesitant. Hiccup was grateful enough to take up her hand. Her question, though, surprised him. Had she really heard what he said?
Crap. Now you've got to think of an excuse to cover your tracks.
"Oh, that? I was just... thinking out loud!" Hiccup explained, eyes brightening somewhat at what he thought was clearly a clever lie. "Yeah. I was just thinking about how... how much more danger Berk would have been in if I hadn't killed that dragon. That would be one more dragon we'd have to worry about. But, it's all in the past. No reason to dwell on what's been said and done, right?" Hiccup asked hopefully. He was silently hoping she would buy his cover ups. He didn't even realize how bad a liar he clearly was.
Whatever you do, Hiccup, don't mention that it was an accident. That's the last thing you need to do. Hiccup told himself. The last thing he needed was his secret being found out. Though, really, with how poorly he had managed in classes it was a wonder someone hadn't figured it out.

Astrid gave Hiccup a strong pull up as he accepted her hand, clearly not buying the cover up. Her eyes narrowed dangerously, her hands were back across her chest. He was a terrible liar, his words coming either a bit to fast, to slow, to casual, or to nuerotic. Though his cover up hadn't made her ease up on him anymore.Even if it had been the truth, she'd been displeased of how he'd been 'congratulating' himself.
As he said he'd meant to do that, she only rolled her eyes. "Yeah, everyone wants to leave a trail the size of a gronckle." she chided, rolling her eyes once more. She exaggerated the size, of course, but she didn't feel the need to point that out. At Hiccup's explanatian, Astrid sighed inwardly.
" I think we could learn from the past." she said carefully thinking over her words, and rolling them in her mind before speaking them. " Like, when you murdered the monstrous nightmare?" she tired to choose her words carefully, keeping an eye on Hiccup for his reaction. With her back to the lake, she turned to Hiccup, brow raised.
Astrid contemplated telling Hiccup how much of a bad liar he was, but that would probably make him try and explain himself even harder, and she didn't want to be hear for however long that'd take, but she also wanted to get an answer. Naturally suspicious, it wasn't an uncommon occurance to her.

Hiccup was grateful that he had been pulled back to his feet, though it felt like a stronger pull than he would have thought necessary. Then again, given how much weaker he was than the other Vikings it was to be expected that he wouldn't know just how strong a pull needed to be. At Astrid's remark concerning the size of his trail, Hiccup frowned a bit. "Oh, darn. And I had been hoping it was more like a Terrible Terror on a bad day." Hiccup remarked casually, his usual sarcastic flare finally making an appearance in his tone. He wouldn't have said it was quite as large as Astrid was making it sound. Then again, he really hadn't been paying attention to the size. Hiccup had been more focused on just trying to get away from Berk so he could think with some privacy. Of course, that had clearly failed since Astrid had found him.
Now it was Hiccup's turn to carefully try and choose his words. He bit his lip briefly, taking in what Astrid had said, and thought for a moment. Had it really been murder? The Nightmare had been trying to kill him. Sure, he hadn't intentionally killed the dragon... but was it really murder? "I wouldn't say 'murder', Astrid. I'd say... sufficiently dealing with the situation." Hiccup said at last. Not the best cover up, he would admit silently, but it was something. He really wouldn't have considered killing the Nightmare as murder when the dragon had been trying to kill him.
"I mean... it was trying to kill me. I was just doing... I was..." Hiccup found himself pausing. Why had he supposedly killed the Nightmare? Hiccup had never really thought of a valid reason. No one had ever asked him before. Brief congratulatory, self important tone that he had tried to use before Astrid had questioned whether it had been murder or not had vanished. It was unintentional. Hiccup didn't even realized he had slipped out of that tone. Hiccup found his eyes focusing on the ground again. He did admittedly still feel bad about what had happened.
"...I was just doing what anyone else would have done." Hiccup said quietly. He was slowly losing his resolve. Did he ever have much resolve to try and cover his tracks? He wasn't certain anymore. Hiccup realized it probably wasn't how anyone else would have thought to try and kill a dragon. The other Vikings would have used a weapon. Him? He had unintentionally brought down the full force of a partially burned pillar on the Nightmare. Perhaps, if anyone did believe what they had thought happened, it had been a bit overkill.

"I find that hard to believe." Tuffnut made his way over to the duo. If anything the moment Hiccup was there it would have been just as better to torment the boy even without Astrid but that was not the case this time. Either way he would enjoy it. "Every time you even saw a dragon you would run like the chicken you are. How is it that you managed to sucker up enough bravery to defeat this one?"
Eyes narrowed, he had been thinking this for the past few days, he was sure the others were too. There was no way that this twerp had actually intended to kill that dragon. It was ridiculous

At Hiccup's words, Astrid cocked a fist back. Almost ready to strike Hiccup she let her fist fall. That wouldn't help her get answers, not with Hiccup. Plus it probably wouldn't be good if Hiccup came home with a black eye, Astrid trailing after him. Astrid studied Hiccup as bit his lip, his body emanating caution. Astrid's eyes were narrowed slightly, and she pushed her bangs back with her hand, the blonde hair falling back over her eyes almost immediately.
As Hiccup spoke, she felt pleased, the word choice had caused Hiccup into deeper thought, farther than she'd expected. His first set of words came smoothly, not completely believable, but smooth. His tone eventually slipped, he couldn't even look her in the eyes. Though she couldn't disagree that every viking would of down what he'd done- killed a dragon. Though she'd hate to admit it, so she wouldn't say it aloud, Hiccup wasn't every viking. She couldn't deny that the dragon had been trying to kill him, that was probably what happened. Another thought crossed her mind, why had he been so far away? Away from the village enough that they'd had to take a walk to an outlook over the ocean to find him.
So she decided to voice this, "Well, I can't deny that, I would have done that," to her it was a praise, not commonly used, "but why were you so far away looking for trouble?" she questioned, eyes automatically narrowing. He wasn't even good fighting for himself in an arena, how could he have fought one, one on one? Without others' help?
Astrid questioned the teen's motives, if he wanted to prove himself, why go off and kill your first dragon alone, where no one could see? Was it because he didn't want anyone to stop him? He was normally discouraged from doing so. Her eyes narrowed slightly more, her mind forcing thoughts on her to consider him a threat once again.
And than Tuffnut appeared, and she internally curse the boy, her hands clenched into claws. She had been getting so far, with another male was present, Hiccup would no doubt close up. Typical guys. she thought bitterly, crossing her arms over her chest and biting into her lower lip, now pressed into a thin, white line.

Hiccup had opened his mouth to respond, getting ready to explain how he had intended on trying to down a Night Fury, but the arrival of the second blond teen, Tuffnut, he faltered. It was no secret that Tuffnut had developed an extreme disliking of him since that night. Almost as if the other boy was threatened by him. At first Hiccup had thought that it was a good thing, having a rival meant the other boys at least thought something of him beyond his uselessness. But as the days went on, and as the torment became more noticeable, Hiccup began to think otherwise.
"I... uh..." Hiccup subconsciously took a step back, closer to the lake, as he fumbled around for an explanation for Tuffnut. He was beginning to feel very small compared to Astrid and Tuffnut, both of whom were questioning just what had happened that night. While not so directly, it was clear that was what they were doing. To Hiccup, at least, that much was clear. While Hiccup did want to stop talking, to just close up and pretend the whole conversation had never happened, it wasn't going to go down like that. With two of his fellow Vikings present, there would be no way he could get out of telling the story without someone beating an answer out of him.
Hiccup wanted to mention how there had been a Night Fury, how he had tried to down it, but that only seemed to make his story that much more unbelievable. He'd already dug himself into a deep enough hole without making it worse for himself by seeming to lie about a Night Fury. "It... it was like this. There was no way I would have been able to try and help with everyone else around. We all know how well everyone thought of me before." Hiccup said. Hiccup knew all too well how much the other Vikings had despised him before. Useless. Weak. A waste of space. More often than not Hiccup had been told to get out of the way when the other Vikings were doing things. "So after Gobber left the forge, I snuck out." Hiccup could still remember that night. It was hard not to with what had happened.
He paused again, mulling over his tale before deciding to continue. How could he tell it without mentioning that it had been an accident? "I didn't purposefully go looking for that dragon, I just sort of ended up farther away from the fighting. Before I knew what was happening, there it was staring me down. I... I didn't want to... no, I didn't know how to best go about trying to fight it, so I decided to... lead it away." Hiccup explained. Not entirely untrue. He had been leading it away from where he had been trying to shoot down the Night Fury, but it had never been his intention.
"I... I don't even remember how I ended up where I did. ...Or how I killed the dragon." the last part was a blatant lie. He knew how he killed it. Accidentally. Hiccup just didn't want to admit that it had been an accident. He could only imagine how Astrid and Tuffnut would react if they figured out that it had never been his intention to kill the dragon.

Tuffnut rolled his eyes for a moment as he listened to the story from the boy. It wasn't like he cared what kind of story the boy told, it was just impossible that he had managed to kill a dragon before the rest of them. It was unheard of. Sure powerful vikings could have done it no problem, but Hiccup was nothing more than a weak screw up. To him, the story seemed like a bunch of lies but the teenager decided not to let HIccup know that.
The last statement made him surprised but then he snorted "You don't remember how you killed the dragon?" he asked. "That's pathetic." If anything, he didn't really care for Hiccup to begin with but after seeing what had happened, the boy was now getting on his last nerve.
"What kind of moron doesn't remember how he killed his first dragon?"

Astrid didn't believe the stuttering teen, she was to suspicious to believe him had he told her the truth. Some might have called it an extreme case of paranoia or distrust. The girl wanted to punch Tuffnut, her hand already clenched in the fist that'd do the job, but he had a valid point.
"How can you not remember killing a monstrous nightmare?" she tapped her foot expectantly, her teeth clenched in her mouth, her jaw flexing. Most of Hiccup's story could have been believable, atleast to the adults. But she knew Hiccup, she'd grown up with him, trained with him. There was no way he would have thought of going off alone to try and do the deed himself. Most people had good reason to keep him from the fight, proven by dragon training.
"I can't say your being unbelievable, but I know you, and you can't lie to me, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the third." she emphasized his full name, brilliant blue eyes narrowed. She pointed a thumb at Tuffnut, "And this one has a point. How could you not remember?" her muscles were rigid with irritation.
Hiccup couldn't lie to her for much longer, if he did, she'd get the truth no matter what. It seemed to be part of her drive, knowing everything about everything. Knowledge seemed a large weapon as did brute force, though most prefered the latter than the former.
"And if you weren't looking for the dragon, what were you doing?" she'd been paying more attention to the scrawny reddish haired brunette than ever before. He should be flattered.

Ouch. Full name.
Hiccup flinched visibly. There really was no way that he would be able to get out of telling the full tale now that both of them were directly questioning his lie. "I... well... you see..." Hiccup faltered, taking another step back and only vaguely aware of his location was he briefly glanced about him. It was almost as if he was trying to look about the valley in an attempt to find something in nature that would help him escape telling the full story. He couldn't let it be known that his only dragon kill had been completely unintentional. Much as he felt guilty about what had happened, he was more afraid of their reactions to the truth than the inevitable disappointment that would come from Stoick and the other adults.
At last, Hiccup heaved a great sigh. Quite the feat for such a scrawny Viking, making his defeat known so audibly. "...All right, so I do remember. I didn't even think I would find that Nightmare. See... I... I thought I saw a Night Fury that night on the raid."
Here we go. They're going to hate you more than ever.
Despite his inner thoughts, Hiccup knew he had to continue. Whether he wanted to or not, the truth would be out in a matter of minutes. Hiccup let one boot shuffle awkwardly against the ground as he gripped the side of his arm with his right hand. He could only hope that the truth wouldn't be spread through the village like wildfire. "I thought that maybe if I could catch it, things would get better. So I... I snuck out of the forge and... went looking for it. But of course, the gods hate me. I... missed. Horribly. In fact, my device malfunctioned. I got knocked back from the force of it opening."
Hiccup could hear his heart pounding in his ears. As the real story unfolded, he could feel himself trembling. ...It might have also been from the fact that he was still quite damp from his falling in the lake, but that was beside the point. Hiccup almost didn't want to go on. The truth of that night was not something he willingly wanted to reveal, but there he was letting everything that had happened come out for the first time.
"By the time I recovered from the impact, the Nightmare was right above me. I guess it saw me get knocked back and thought... thought I was some tasty snack. So... I ran. I... I didn't even know what part of the village I was in anymore. All I saw was that pillar... a safe haven. So I hid behind it." Hiccup closed his eyes, not wanting to see the presumably stunned looks on Astrid and Tuffnut's faces, and took a moment to let his story sink in. It really was sounding unbelievable. Seeing a Night Fury? Trying to catch it? Just happening to find a pillar to hide behind? It almost seemed too good to be true. But it had happened. Hiccup knew it had.
"I... guess I didn't realize how hard I was pushing against that pillar. I was so focused on trying to hide that I... didn't think. Before I knew it, the pillar had fallen. Then there was this..." Hiccup almost didn't want to continue. He could still hear the dragon's cry in his head. The sickening crunch that had followed. The eerie silence only penetrated by the crackling of dying flames around him. That night had haunted Hiccup for more than a few nights, if only for that alone. "...This cry. A crunch. ...Then silence. I just lay there on that pillar, holding on for dear life and... anticipating the revelation to be that I had killed someone." green eyes, filled with guilt, opened again at last. He had to face up to what had happened. Even if it meant being rejected further by his peers.
"...By the time I found myself again, everyone else had shown up. That's when I saw the Nightmare beneath me. ...I never meant to kill it. It just... happened."
Here it comes. They're going to start yelling. Any minute now.
Hiccup flinched away, almost anticipating that Astrid or Tuffnut would harm him now that the truth was out. He was no killer. It had only been an accident. That was why he felt so lousy about what had happened. That was why he had never been able to perform in the classes. It had only been a pure coincidence that he had killed the Nightmare at all.

The blonde couldn't believe his ears. It was almost too good to be true. This dork hadn't even meant to kill that dragon. It was an accident. An accident?! This kid had become a hero because of an acident? Oh now he was pissed.
The teen wanted to smack Hiccup so bad. Yet, something held him back. He glanced at Astrid, he wondered if she was just as angry as he was or if she even believed it.
"You accidentally killed it?" he asked. "We work our butts off and we get nothing yet you manage to be some great hero because of an accident?!"

"AHA!" Astrid screeched with pleasure. All sense that Hiccup had been competition was gone. Sure, she was pissed he had gotten all this attention on an accident, but her killing her own monstrous nightmare in the arena had caused her own attention.
" So I was the first to kill a dragon with talent involved!" she crowed. The momentary delight of the revelation pleased her to a degree and she relaxed slightly. Probably not what either of Tuffnut or Hiccup to expect, but that had been simmering deep in her for a long while. THe anger and jealousy of being outdone by the scrawny teen.
She'd been admittedly shocked by Hiccup's story, and hadn't believed him, part of her still didn't. It was to lucky, but there had been a monstrous nightmare underneath the pillar Hiccup had clung to. She'd been one of the first onseen, she'd seen Hiccup's face, at first she'd thought that he'd been harmed fighting the dragon, a battle scar. But now, it could hvae been guilt. She was conflicted on the inside, so she did the only thing she could do.
She threw a punch at Hiccup's arm. "That's for making me think you were competition." Then she swung her arm lightly at his head, palm facing him. She tried to aim a cuff at his ear, not to hard, but she didn't know if it would feel hard to the kid.
"And that's for everything else."
