Hiccup centric story shenanigans again. I was listening to Hurricane by 30 Seconds to Mars, and this idea came along.
Torn
If Hiccup acknowledged the subtle presence of the other Vikings that had been looking his way, it was hard to determine. The scrawny redhead had been sitting at the pier and staring out at the ocean for what felt like an eternity. Just… staring. No one could piece together what he was thinking, and he liked it that way. Ever since he had been saved by Toothless, Hiccup had been doing some serious thinking. He had been thinking long and hard about the way the Vikings lived and the way they killed dragons without question. What if there was more to it than what they thought they knew? What if there was a reason the dragons were taking food? Suddenly, everything Hiccup thought he knew had been thrown upside down and he felt as though he was caught in a hurricane. Why didn’t it make sense anymore?
The worst part about it was that he couldn’t tell Stoick any of what he was thinking. It had been bad enough being unable to tell his father the truth about what had happened with the Nightmare he supposedly killed, but now he had a bigger problem. He had befriended a Night Fury and was questioning the ways Vikings had always lived. Hiccup couldn’t even tell Astrid about that much. She had been kind to not inform Stoick of what had really happened that night with the Nightmare, but he doubted she would repeat such a kindness if she learned he had befriended a Night Fury.
Hiccup felt as though he was caught in the middle of the situation. On the one hand, he was born a Viking. His father was the chief of the Vikings and he had Viking blood in his veins. No amount of denial would change that fact. On the other hand, he had a strong bond with Toothless. Sure he and the Night Fury were different species, but it didn’t mean they couldn’t be friends. It was beginning to feel as though he was a dragon trapped in a Viking’s body. Hiccup had never fit in with the village before, so who was to say that wasn’t the case? He was probably the only Viking to ever feel sympathetic toward a dragon… maybe he was on the wrong side of the war.
Emerald eyes darted down to the thrashing waters of the ocean for a fleeting moment. He considered throwing himself into the cold water, if only to make things easier, but only briefly did he consider such a thing. Killing himself wouldn’t solve the problem. It would only make things worse. Besides that, he would only be giving Snotlout the satisfaction of knowing that he was the victor in their supposed competition… at least until Astrid kicked his ass. No, Hiccup couldn’t end things so rashly. He needed to figure out just what to do about the situation with the dragons and Vikings.
But what can you do? You’re just one Viking.
This was true. Hiccup was only one Viking, and he couldn’t exactly take on the entire village of Berk and years of agreeing with the notion that dragons were inherently evil. “You sure know how to dig yourself into some deep pits, Hiccup.” Hiccup told himself. What could he do? He was torn between two worlds; the world of the Vikings that he had grown up with, and the world of the dragons that he had only recently become a part of. Whatever he did, he couldn’t please both worlds. …This was going to prove to be very difficult.

Alternate universe time! ...Yeah, I listened to Tell My Father far too many times for my own good and it inspired me to write this. Told from Toothless' point of view because... well, you'll see.
Worth It?
Darting to and fro between the intricacies of the humongous dragon’s back was much more difficult than it seemed. Toothless knew that time was of the essence, and that if he didn’t fly away very fast that he and Hiccup would be engulfed in the flames. That would be the end of it. Everything that had been done would have been for nothing. Toothless didn’t want that. He wanted to make sure that his and Hiccup’s efforts had been worth something. However, something was wrong. He couldn’t feel the tail fin that Hiccup had made for him anymore. Glancing back, Toothless’ eyes widened in horror at the sight of the fin burning away completely. Panic went through Toothless’ whole being. He had to get himself and Hiccup to safety before something horrible happened. Amidst Hiccup’s frantic cries, all of which were running together incoherently, Toothless could barely think of what to do. Maybe if he dropped into a nosedive, he could save them still.
Unfortunately, there was no time to spare. One of Hiccup’s cries caught Toothless’ attention at last. Pale eyes shot forward and fixed themselves on the massive tail of the downed dragon. It was coming right toward them. Without the tail fin Hiccup had made, they couldn’t get out of the way. Within the next few moments, Toothless felt the tail collide with his body. He also felt something else. He suddenly felt lighter. Hiccup!
As Toothless fell through the air, he caught sight of Hiccup falling. Down, down the little Viking fell. Right toward the flames of the downed dragon. There was only one thing Toothless could do. He flapped his wings as hard as he could and propelled himself toward Hiccup. He had to catch him. He just had to! A fall from such a height would surely kill the scrawny redhead. Toothless didn’t care how suicidal the attempt would be. He just knew he had to catch Hiccup and save him from a horrible death. As his body met the flames, Toothless squeezed his eyes shut and grasped the air where he thought Hiccup was. He couldn’t tell if he had succeeded in catching his rider or not. All he knew was that he was falling. Down, down through the intense heat of the flames.
After what felt like an eternity, Toothless felt himself crash against the rocky ground below. Pain shot through the Night Fury’s body, causing him to cry out in pain before slumping over on the ground. It was only when the pain had really begun to sink in that Toothless realized that his arms were quite empty. Pale green eyes widened somewhat, and after just a moment of contemplation he looked down. His arms were empty. No Hiccup.
Night Furies were renowned for many things; their rarity, their speed, and their firepower mostly. The thing that made them so feared was their ability to never miss. They always hit their mark.
…Toothless had missed.
Ignoring the pain shooting through his body, Toothless rose to his feet and looked around in a frenzied panic. Where was Hiccup? What had happened to his rider after he’d fallen? Toothless wished that he could speak in that moment. If he could, he surely would have called out for Hiccup. His Viking would answer and everything would be okay. Hiccup must have landed in the water. He had to be safe. He just had to be. Toothless wouldn’t accept the idea that his friend wouldn’t be okay. Ear-like appendages rose when he detected the sound of voices. They were voices that were calling for Hiccup. Toothless couldn’t answer, though. He had to keep looking.
Suddenly, Toothless spotted something against the ground nearby. A fallen, scrawny shape against the misty air. His heart skipped a beat; it was Hiccup. The Night Fury approached quickly, eager to meet Hiccup and ready for a welcoming hug from the Viking. He didn’t even care about how much pain he was in. He just wanted to see Hiccup again. However, when he reached Hiccup, Toothless realized that something was wrong. The young Viking was burned horribly. The sight of Hiccup in such a state only magnified Toothless’ guilt. It was hit fault that Hiccup was in such a state. What worried him, though, was that Hiccup didn’t appear to be moving. Toothless moaned softly, almost as if he was trying to rouse Hiccup from what appeared to be a state of sleep. Maybe the burns he had suffered had just knocked him out. That had to be it.
Several moments passed, and despite the moaning Toothless had done Hiccup still hadn’t moved. The Night Fury had become more aware of the presence of other Vikings, including Astrid, and had grown more concerned. Why wasn’t Hiccup moving? Toothless wasn’t stupid. He knew what death was… he just didn’t want to think of Hiccup dying. The redhead was his best friend. He couldn’t be dead. He simply couldn’t be.
Toothless wanted to prove that Hiccup wasn’t dead. He knew in his heart of hearts that his friend was just fine. He was just messing with them… pretending to be dead. Toothless nudged Hiccup with his snout, hoping to garner some kind of response from the young Viking. Nothing happened. Toothless’ invisible brow creased and he tried again, nudging Hiccup once more with his snout in an attempt to rouse the Viking. Wake up. Wake up! Several more nudges followed. It was becoming evident that Toothless was starting to lose control of his grip on his emotions. Ear-like appendages dropped down pitifully as he tried to nudge Hiccup one last time. Once more, the Viking didn’t move.
“No… Hiccup…”
The voice of Stoick the Vast roused Toothless from his shocked state. The Night Fury turned to look at the larger, more muscular Viking who had stopped beside him. The look of horror on Stoick’s face as his gaze went to the fallen form of Hiccup just about broke Toothless’ heart. No father should have to see their son die. Not like this. Astrid also came up alongside Toothless, and the Night Fury took a few steps back as the blonde dropped to her knees beside Hiccup. The realization that Hiccup was gone was beginning to sink in much more deeply when Astrid and Stoick went to Hiccup’s side. Dead. His best friend was dead and it was his fault. He had missed.
The problem the dragons had faced for so long had finally been solved. They were free to live in peace again. The Vikings wouldn’t have to kill them anymore. Everything was okay…
…but at what cost had such peace come? A father had lost a son. A girl had lost her love. …A Night Fury had lost his companion.
Toothless’ sadness matched that of Stoick… perhaps not even that. Perhaps the Night Fury was the one suffering the most from the loss of the redheaded, awkward Viking everyone had known as Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III. They had beaten the odds and proven that Vikings and dragons could get along if they tried hard enough and just took the time to understand one another. They had killed the dragon that would come to be known as the Green Death together. But now… Toothless was alone.
He accompanied the Vikings back to Berk, unable to fly off on his own accord, and was allowed to remain in the village with the other dragons. It would have been what Hiccup wanted, after all. Relations between Toothless and Stoick weren’t great, as was understandable since Toothless had failed to save the life of his son and acted as a constant reminder of that fact simply by living there, but he was allowed to stay. Despite that fact, after Hiccup’s funeral Toothless took his leave. He knew he could never belong in Berk. Not while he acted as a reminder of Stoick’s lost son. Hours after the funeral had come to an end, Toothless vanished into the night. He couldn’t fly, but even if he could he wouldn’t have wanted to. Hiccup had helped him fly. Without him, there was no reason to try and fly. By the time the Vikings realized the Night Fury was gone, Toothless had made his way back to the cove he had lived in while Hiccup was alive.
Toothless didn’t stay there long. One day when Astrid attempted to visit, to try and comfort the distraught dragon, she found that he was gone. Some Vikings believed that Toothless had simply moved on to a new home. Others believed that he had simply vanished, too overpowered by the loss of Hiccup to continue living.
As for Toothless himself, he was the only one that knew the truth. He simply couldn’t bear to live near Berk anymore. It reminded him too much of his lost scrawny human companion. The Night Fury had simply gone off away from the cove, never speaking a word and never even hinting at where he was going. All he knew was that he needed to get away. Just like that, Toothless was gone. No one from Berk would ever see him again.
It was a strange thing, really. No one had ever considered Hiccup anything special when he was alive. The only thing he had accomplished in life was generally proving himself to be an annoyance and not very useful. It took his death, his noble sacrifice as some would refer to it, to make the other Vikings realize that his life had been much more important than it had seemed. The only one that had realized that before Astrid had been Toothless. Both he and Hiccup were gone. One could only wonder if the sacrifice of Hiccup had truly been worth it in the end. It had brought peace, but at what cost? All anyone was left wondering was whether or not such a sacrifice had truly been worth it.

^_^ Thank you. I kind of feel bad for writing it now. :c But I had fun with it... even if I did almost cry while writing it. ^^;
Anyway, I want to write more. I have no ideas, though. SO. I shall open requests. You know the drill. Just tell me what you want, and I'll do it. More specifically, I need to know...
Characters involved Setting (if you don't have anything specific in mind, I'll come up with one myself) Genre (type of story... angst, comedy, romance... etc) General idea of what you want to happen
Oh, and you can ask for as many stories as you want. Just keep in mind that it might take a bit of time for me to actually get all the requests done. Oh, and please don't nag me about getting requests done. It only makes me work slower.
Okay, fire away. :3
